What Lurks Beneath your SQL Server : WMI & Error Logs for the Rest of Your Environment with Michael Bourgon

There's more to it than just SQL Server
Friday, October 16, 2015 3:38:00 PM Categories: Meeting
There's far more occurring on your Windows servers than just SQL Server, and looking at ERRORLOG won't show you the whole story: other applications stealing your memory, OS issues, hardware errors, and more. We'll start by looking at different ways to collect Event Logs. From there we'll delve into WMI and WQL, which allow us to query servers (remotely or locally) to get information such as performance statistics, System and Event Logs, and even changes within SQL Server. We'll finish it off with two immediately-usable implementations you can set up on Thursday morning.

Michael Bourgon is the Senior Production DBA for a large healthcare company. He's always looking for a better way to be a Lazy DBA - spending far too many hours automating processes in order to accomplish that. In Fort Worth we think of him as the Caspian Sea Monster of Eventing.

Time out for our hosting provider

Well, it's a good thing we know about backups and restores. Thanks for everybody that sent a heads up about the site. I have about 6 or so different sites hosted on various servers and when I let the hosting service know I couldn't reach a couple of those servers, the ticket submission failed to post. Then the follow up email I sent even bounced. I hate days like that. So here's to all the hard working geeks that reversed that sorry state! Thank you very much and I hope you get to sleep soon! Sept 16 Meeting - SSIS Performance Tuning with BimlScript - David Stein

Sunday, September 13, 2015 10:23:00 PM Categories: Meeting
Abstract:
You know that Biml can automate ETL loads, but your data warehouse is several terabytes with a tight load window. In this demo focused presentation, we'll discuss how to use BimlScript to accomplish the following:
- Dynamically create multiple SISS packages for a data warehouse ETL load, each following a different best practice design pattern.
- Automatically execute each package multiple times and record the results for analysis.
- Determine which package version should be used in production.

The only way to be sure that your SSIS packages are performing optimally is to test them against multiple patterns. Make your life easier and let BimlScript do the work for you.

Bio:
David Stein - Data Warehouse Architect and Independent Consultant - has more than a decade of experience working in SQL Server Business Intelligence. He’s designed multi-terabyte, multi-tenant Data Warehouses from scratch as well as saved projects in serious jeopardy.

Aug 19 Meeting - SQL Server Unit Testing with Mike Hotek

Thursday, August 13, 2015 8:31:00 AM Categories: Meeting
For those of you that joined us for the warehousing class Mike taught earlier this the year we went through source control, branching & merging, unit testing, code generators and all kinds of great processes. Mike wanted to say more about unit testing than he had time to in the class.

Topic:
To meet the needs of rapid application development and the rapidly changing needs of the business, your database code needs to be resilient.  Even the most resilient code can become incredibly expensive when things break.  Catching issues early in a development cycle saves time, money, and a lot of sleepless nights.  In this session, we will go over the basics of unit testing using the open source tSQLt framework.

Speaker:
Mike Hotek has lectured, authored and consulted all over the world and is currently the Business Intelligence Architect at Six Flags. He has enabled a huge variety of companies in numerous industries with SQL Server tools since before it was a Microsoft product (long time). After authoring 10 SQL Server books, he not going to Disney World. Six Flags is more fun.

July 15 Meeting - Defend your Data! Know the Rules: Compliance, Laws & Regulations with Joan Bradford-Pope

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 10:23:00 AM Categories: Meeting

Ok all you data defenders, ignorance of the law is no defense.  If someone is asking you to do something with the data that could get you and your company in trouble you need to know. Many companies do not invest in this kind of training for IT, but we have in our midst a globe-trotting rock star of an auditor that is taking the time to share her experience with us.

She will cover, from the perspective of the DBA, the highlights of Sarbanes-Oxley; Graham, Leach, Bliley;  HIPPA, PCI, and state privacy laws (Texas).  You will be able to better understand the practical solutions you can take to enhance compliance with these laws, regulations, and rules.  We will go to the code and regs and some guidebooks that the regulators use to see how your processes align with requirements.

Joan has been a business consultant, controller and managed the internal audit function of both a financial services company and a global manufacturer. Her interest in compliance began in graduate school when where she pursued a master’s degree in taxation (Title 26 USC).

June 17 Meeting - Double the Speaker Fun with both Michael Bourgon & Margaret Westrell

Monday, June 15, 2015 5:39:00 PM Categories: Meeting

Not one but two members of the Emdeon dream team are taking stage this Wednesday!

This is a farewell tour for Lieutenant Commander Westrell before she heads back to Baltimore to navigate the SQL seas from there. She will be greatly missed.

This is also your last chance to see Bourgon before he presents at 24 hours of PASS this coming June 24th. If you've missed him speaking seven times previously at SQL Saturdays around the country, you can be sure he saves the best interpretive dance numbers for us!

Come see how they Solve Problems at Scale and learn when "How much?" becomes "Too much!"

Topic: "How much?" becomes "Too much!"
Organizations are collecting and storing increasing amounts of data.  While business
managers discuss analyzing data, it is often left to IT and the DBAs to figure out how to
store and manage that data.  In this short presentation, Margaret will discuss data
retention, a facet of data governance, review the options SQL Server offers, and present
an effective, low impact, method for pruning large tables to maintain a manageable amount
of data.

Margaret Westrell has been a SQL Server DBA for 3 years and is currently lead for an DBA
operations group wrestling with substantial data growth.  Prior to being a DBA, she was a
.Net developer of database-centric applications.  In her first career, she served in the Navy during the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm.  When not taming space issues, she enjoys spoiling her husband, the family dog and two cats, and keeping up with her daughter at college.

May 20 Meeting - Nancy Risha: Gathering Requirements Can Be Painless

Sunday, May 10, 2015 10:23:00 PM Categories: Meeting

Ah, and the things this team does with those requirements! For those of you that came to the data warehousing class, this is the front end steering the outcomes you saw in that class.

You can craft the most elegant solution, but no one cares if you're not solving the right problem.

Synopsis: Gathering requirements is sometimes thought of as an arduous task.  Sometimes there are endless meetings, multiple changes and what you end up with isn’t what the user wanted.  There is hope, and gathering requirements doesn’t have to be endless meetings to decide on what those requirements are.  This presentation will cover how to effectively gather requirements, what to do when those requirements change and learning to speak the same language as your end users.

About the Presenter:  Nancy Risha is the Manager of Business Analytics for Six Flags Corporate.  She is currently in her final semester for an MBA with an emphasis in IT Management.

April 15 Meeting - Tim Mitchell: Managing Data Quality In SSIS

Monday, April 13, 2015 10:38:00 AM Categories: Meeting

Managing Data Quality In SSIS

Managing data quality should be a part of every enterprise data management strategy, and a key component of that is the detection and resolution of bad data during the ETL process. As the primary data movement and transformation tool in the Microsoft data management stack, SQL Server Integration Services is often the central point of administration for data quality. In this session, I'll demonstrate some methods for detecting and fixing bad data using SSIS using native tools, scripting, and SQL Server Data Quality Services (DQS) integration.

About the Presenter

Tim Mitchell is a business intelligence consultant, author, and trainer.  He has been working with SQL Server for over a decade, working primarily in business intelligence, ETL/SSIS, data quality, and reporting.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Texas A&M at Commerce, and has been a Microsoft SQL Server MVP since 2010.  Tim is an independent business intelligence consultant and a partner with Linchpin People, and is the principal at Tyleris Data Solutions.

As an active member of the community, Tim has spoken at international, regional, and local venues including the SQL PASS Summit, SQLBitsSQL ConnectionsSQL Saturday events, and various user groups and webcasts.  Tim is coauthor of the book SSIS Design Patterns, and is a contributing author on the charity book project MVP Deep Dives 2.  He is an active group member and speaker at the North Texas SQL Server User Group in the Dallas area.

You can visit his website and blog at TimMitchell.net or follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/Tim_Mitchell.
