Abstract:
For SQL Server folk comfortable with relational data, XML is an unavoidable evil. SQL doesn't work on it, and nested substrings are awkward, so how can we shred it?
In this presentation I cover the basics of handling XML. I briefly review what XML is, and point out where we commonly see it. I show basic XPath, touch on XQuery, and spend the bulk of my time demoing the main methods in T-SQL for applying XPath to XML.
Bonus topics include XML schemas (and why they actually matter), XML indexes, and a CLR demo.

I've only been a DBA for two years, so don't take my word for anything!
Before this new career I was a teacher and tutor, so I love explaining concepts, especially math.
